Asylum in the Netherlands
- You do not need to apply for asylum
- You do not need a visa. You also do not need to apply for a visa or extend your current visa
- You can stay in the Netherlands for 90 days.This can be extended to 180 days
- As a Ukrainian refugee, you will not get any problems if you stay in the Netherlands for more than 180 days
- You can find more information at the Immigration and Naturalization Service of the Ministry of Justice and Security or at the Dutch Council for Refuge
Register at the municipality
- Registration at the municipality where you (temporarily) live is mandatory
- If you live in a municipal shelter: You can register at the municipal shelter
- If you live with a host family: You must register at the municipal shelter at Heuvellaan 50. You can only register on tuesdays and thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- You have to bring a Ukrainian passport or identity card
- For minor children (17 and younger) who do not have a passport or identity card, the parent (who does have a passport or identity card) may make a statement under oath (VOE) or take a vow
- If you are a third-country national with the right to temporary protection, you must show your residence permit from Ukraine
- After registration in the Personal Records Database (BRP) you will receive a Citizen Service Number (BSN)
- The BSN is your personal number for contact with the government. For example for healthcare, education or taxes. You need it for all official matters. For instance to open a Dutch bank account or register your children at a school
- Your registration is automatically reported to the Tax Authorities and the Social Insurance Bank (SVB)
- After your registration, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) will invite you to obtain proof that you are in the Netherlands under special conditions. We call this 'temporary protection'
Third-country nationals from Ukraine
You are a third-country national with the right to temporary protection if:
- You have a nationality other than Ukrainian, and you had international protection or national protection in Ukraine on February 23, 2022
- You had an (other) valid Ukrainian residence permit on February 23, 2022
You need the following documents to register with the municipality:
- A valid passport of the country of origin
- A Ukrainian residence document that was valid on February 23, 2022
You are a third-country national WITHOUT the right to temporary protection if:
- You stayed in Ukraine without a residence permit, because the application was not yet ready
- You must then submit another residence application in the Netherlands
You have no documents:
Try to get as many documents as possible to the Netherlands. Otherwise you have to leave the Netherlands for the country of your nationality. De Dienst Terugkeer en Vertrek (DT&V) can sometimes help you arrange departure. This is only possible if you do not have an asylum request or if you want to withdraw it. You can e-mail the DT&V via ilc@dtv.minvenj.nl
- If you have no passport: you must request a new passport from your embassy or consulate
- If you have no valid residence document from Ukraine: you have to wait for the IND. You can stay at the shelter until you get more information

Open a Dutch bank account
- After registration with the municipality, and receiving your BSN, you can open an account at a bank
- From the bank, you will receive an IBAN number, a card with PIN code and information ons how to transfer money with internet banking

Living Allowance (Leefgeld)
- If you have registered with the municipality, you will receive money to live on. This is called a Living Allowance
- The Living Allowance ends when you leave the municipality or when you have found paid work. You must report this to leefgeld@hilversum.nl
- You receive the Living Allowance in 3 parts. How much money you get, depends on your age and how you live
You live in a shelter provided by the municipality (with food). You receive per month:
- € 55 per person for clothing and other personal costs

- € 205 per person for food
- € 55 per person for clothing and other personal costs
You are 18 years or older and live with a host family. You receive per month:
- € 205 per person for food
- € 55 per person for clothing and other personal costs
- € 215 extra, for example for sports or taking the bus to visit your family. You can also use this money to contribute to the costs of the host family. But this is not mandatory

Receive Living Allowance
- You must be registered in the BRP at the municipality where you (temporarily) live
- You must have received a BSN. You need this number to open a bank accountto which the Living Allowance can be paid out
- The Living Allowance is paid out at fixed times
- You have to apply for the Living Allowance every month
If you live in a municipal shelter
- You will receive an invitation from the municipality. It will tell you when you must go to the municipality (department Sociaal Plein, Wilhelminastraat 1-19). You apply for Living Allowance at that location
- The Living Allowance will be paid monthly on your bank account
- You will receive an invitation every month to apply for your Living Allowance
If you live with a host family
- You must make an appointment with the municipality. In this process, you can choose Living Allowance Ukraine
- You must go to the municipality (department Sociaal Plein, Wilhelminastraat 1-19) on the date and time of your appointment. You apply for Living Allowance at that location
- The Living Allowance will be paid monthly on your bank account
- You have to apply for your Living Allowance every month
Bring:
- Passport of all family members who reside in the Netherlands and receive living allowance: the applicant, partner and child(ren)
- BSN of all family members who reside in the Netherlands and receive living allowance: the applicant, partner and child(ren)
- Bank card of the account number to which the living allowance can be paid
Work
- You are allowed to work in the Netherlands
- You do not need a work permit
- You must be registered in the BRP at the municipality where you (temporarily) live
- You must have received a BSN. You need this number to go to work
- You need Dutch health insurance when you start working. This is mandatory
- Dutch health insurance is not cheap, but for people with little money, there is financial help. This healthcare benefit is called zorgtoeslag
- You must apply for healthcare benefit via DigiD. This is a Digital IDentification system. It is used by the government and many other official organizations. You can apply for a DigiD via DigiD.nl
