gender reassignment

You can request a gender reassignment on the birth certificate in the municipality where you were born. You make an appointment for this. If you wish, you can also have your first name or first names changed.

What do you need to know

  • You personally request to change your gender on your birth certificate. You create a Appointment
  • You are 16 years or older. No parental consent is required
  • You apply in the municipality where you were born
  • If you were not born in the Netherlands, you must submit the application to the Municipality of The Hague
  • If you do not have Dutch nationality, you must have lived in the Netherlands for at least 1 year and have a valid residence status
  • You can also change your first name or first names when registering
  • The application will be processed within 14 days

What do you have to do

Take with you on request

  • Valid ID
  • Expert statement (not older than 6 months). This statement is issued by:
    • Knowledge and Care Center for Gender Dysphoria of the VU University Medical Center (VUmc) in Amsterdam
    • Gender team of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in Groningen
    • Gender team of the Curium and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in Leiden
    • Experts appointed by the BRIC. These are registered in the BIG register
