You need a copy of the civil status if you want to prove a birth, death, marriage, divorce or partner registration in writing. You can request this from the municipality where the event took place.
What do you need to know
- You can request a copy of your civil status from the municipality where the event (for example, marriage, birth or death) took place.
- A copy of the civil registry is different from a extract from the basic registration of persons (BRP). An extract from BRP is proof that you live in Hilversum. This contains your name, address, place of birth and date of birth

Legitimate interest
Would you like to request a copy of your civil status? Then you must be able to explain that you have a 'legitimate interest'. Does the statement relate to you? Then this interest is usually clearly present. Would you like to request an extract about another person? Then the legitimate interest must be explained.
Persons who may have a legitimate interest are:
- Persons to whom the deed relates
- An authorized representative of these persons
- Children or parents of the person to whom the deed relates
- The heirs
- The husband or wife
- The registered partner
- The legal representative.
- The person who needs it around legal proceedings
- The person who needs it due to a marriage/partnership registration
International
We can make an international statement (also known as an extract) if you need it. This contains information in 7 languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Turkish. This is possible NOT ALLOWED in front of:
- Changing from marriage to registered partnership
- Adjust registered partnership to marriage
What do you have to do
- Online (with DigiD): You will receive the statement by post within 4 weeks
- Online (without DigiD): You will receive the statement by post within 4 weeks
- By appointment: You make an appointment and come to the Municipal Office. You will receive the copy immediately. Please bring the following to your appointment:
- Valid ID
- Money (cash or pin)
- If you are applying for someone else, please also bring a letter of consent and a copy of the applicant's valid ID
Authorization
You can give someone else permission to request (authorize) a copy of the civil status for you.
- The authorized representative must be of legal age
- The authorized representative has a letter with your permission
- You write a letter. You both sign this letter
- The authorized representative has a valid proof of identity and a copy of your valid proof of identity
