My child turns 18

When your child turns 18, a number of things will change for your child, but also for you. We have listed the most important things for you.

What will change

Child benefit ends

Child benefit will automatically stop when your child turns 18. On the website of the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) you can read when the last payment is.

Child-related budget ends

The child budget ends from the month after your youngest child turns 18.

Rent allowance can change

Your housing benefit may change if your child is 18 years or older and still lives with you. You will find more information tax.nl

Additional health insurance policy

Up to the age of 18, your child is co-insured free of charge on your health insurance policy. After that, premiums must be paid for health insurance and your child is obliged to pay an excess. Your child can choose to stay with your health insurance or to take out its own health insurance. Take the time to compare and discuss the different options with your child.

Liability insurance

Check whether you have family coverage if your child still lives at home. With family cover, your child remains co-insured as long as your child lives at home.

Maintenance obligation

As a parent, you remain liable for maintenance until your child turns 21. This means that you are still legally responsible for shelter, clothing, food, education and medical assistance for your child. You can propose to your child to help pay for the household (board money). You will find tips for costs at nibud.nl.

Alimony

From the age of 18, your child is entitled to alimony himself. This means that your child receives the alimony. Read more information rijksoverheid.nl.
