18 years: I'm turning 18

From the age of 18, a lot changes in your life. You will also be responsible for a number of (financial) matters. You must arrange these matters yourself. To help you, we have listed the most important things for you below.

What should I arrange?

Apply for DigiD

You need a DigiD if you want to arrange something with a government organization. Such as applying for student financing and healthcare allowance. Applying for a DigiD is free via digital.nl.

Open a bank account

You need a bank account for financial matters such as salary, student loans, payments and a debit card. Many banks have special youth or student accounts.

Take out health insurance

You need health insurance to go to the doctor or hospital. You are co-insured with your parents for free until you turn 18. Health insurance must be paid from the age of 18. Discuss with your parents whether you will remain under your parents' insurance or whether you will take out your own health insurance. Most health insurers have special health insurance policies for young people.

Money for school or studies

From the age of 18 you can apply for money for your studies (MBO, HBO or University). This is called student financing. If you are still going to secondary school or adult education, this is called: student allowance. More information and how to apply for student financing or student allowance can be found here duo.nl.

Apply for allowances

The government has a number of allowances for which you may be eligible. Consider healthcare allowance to pay for your health insurance or housing allowance for renting social housing. More information and applications can be found at toeslagen.nl.

(Social) rental housing

Op wonennet.nl you will find all (social) rental properties from housing cooperatives in Hilversum and the surrounding area. If you want to rent a home, you must register with Woningnet. The longer you are registered, the more chance you have of a home. That is why it is important to register immediately when you turn 18.

Alimony

Are your parents divorced and does one of your parents receive child support? When you turn 18, you can receive alimony yourself. Make agreements about this with your parent(s).

Donor registration

When you turn 18, you automatically enter the donor register. On donorregister.nl you indicate whether or not you want to be a donor. You can always change your choice.

Liability insurance

Liability insurance is not mandatory, but it is recommended to take out. You are then insured if you cause damage to (the property of) others. If you still live at home, you may still be covered by your parents' liability insurance. Check with your parents whether this has been arranged.

funeral insurance

A funeral insurance covers the costs of a cremation or burial. Otherwise, these costs will end up with your surviving relatives. If you are insured with your parents until you are 18, see if you can put this in your own name. Taking out a new insurance can be more expensive.

Help with arranging matters

We understand that it can be difficult to arrange all these matters on your own. Perhaps people around you can help you to arrange things. Are you unable to work it out together? The youth work of Versa Welzijn or the MEE Dichtbij foundation will be happy to help you to arrange everything properly. Their help is free.
