Starting your own business from unemployment

You are unemployed and you want to start your own business. Then you may be able to receive financial assistance from the Decree on assistance for the self-employed (Bbz).

What do you need to know

  • You are unemployed:
    • You get one social assistance benefit
    • Your unemployment benefit (WW) is about to end
    • Your contract is about to expire and you are not entitled to unemployment benefits
    • You will receive unemployment benefits and you need a starting capital. (To start from the WW you must first go to the UWV)
  • You are 18 years or older
  • You will not receive an AOW yet
  • Your net income at the start of your business is less than the social assistance standard that applies to you† Your partner's income also counts. Your Bbz benefit will be lower if you have adult housemates who are 27 or older. This is called the cost-sharing standard
  • You are a Dutch citizen, a citizen of a country in the European Union, or you have a valid residence permit
  • You live in the Netherlands and your company is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (KvK)
  • You will work at least 1225 hours per year in your own company. That's about 24 hours a week
  • You have all the permits required for the work you do. Or you can get those permits
  • Your business must be viable. That means you can earn enough money to live on and pay your business bills. You need to write a good business plan to prove it
