Apply for social assistance benefit

What do you need to know

• You can stop from 2 weeks before your income (for example your Unemployment benefits) apply for social assistance benefits
• You cannot apply for social assistance benefit for a date that has already passed
• The date on which you apply for a benefit is the 1st day on which the benefit can start
• How much money you can get depends on your age and whether you live alone or cohabit. This is called the assistance standard
• Your benefit is lower if you have adult housemates who are 27 or older. This is called the cost-sharing standard
• Your benefit is lower if you cannot understand, speak, read and write the Dutch language well enough according to the Language Requirement Act

Terms & conditions

• You are registered with the municipality of Hilversum
• You are 18 years or older
• You will not receive an AOW yet
• You have no income or a very low income (less than the social assistance level)
• You have little savings or valuable property
• You are not entitled to another benefit or you are still below the social assistance level with that other benefit
• You are not in prison or a remand
• You are doing your best to find work

What do you have to do

You need this information:

• Your citizen service number (BSN)
• Uw DigiD† You can request this on DigiD.nl
• Data about:
  • Your income: salary, alimony, student grants, benefits, tax refunds, some tax credits, some gifts
  • Your assets: bank and savings accounts, cash, inheritance, cash price, jewelry, debts, shares, bonds, cryptocurrencies (such as bitcoin)
  • Your home: the amount of your rent or mortgage
  • Your car: the value of your car
  • Your last employer or the temporary employment agency for which you work or worked and the start and end dates of this contract
• If you live with a partner or housemate, you also need all the information above from them

Request

1. Log in to work.nl with your DigiD
2. Register as a job seeker
3. Apply for a social assistance benefit. Your application will automatically go to the municipality
4. We will contact you within 2 working days of your request. You may receive an invitation for an appointment

After your request

27 years or older

• We will immediately process your request. You must be able to show that you have actively started looking for a job
• You will hear within 8 weeks whether you will receive the benefit. You will then receive assistance from the day you made the application

Younger than 27 year

• We will process your application after 4 weeks. In these 28 days you will first actively look for training or work yourself. Save all applications you make
• You will hear within 12 weeks whether you will receive the benefit. You will then receive assistance from the day you made the application
