Volunteering Reward

You are on welfare and you do voluntary work through an organisation. Then you may be able to get money from the municipality. This is called volunteer premium. This premium is not deducted from your social assistance benefit. You must meet a few conditions.

What do you need to know

  • You are 27 years or older
  • You receive a social assistance benefit
  • The municipality has given you permission to volunteer
  • Volunteering should not stand in the way of finding a paid job
  • You have received social assistance benefits for at least 12 months before the start of the voluntary work. It doesn't have to be 12 months in a row, but there shouldn't be a break of longer than 3 months
  • You volunteer at least 156 hours in a year
  • You are volunteering through an organization
  • You do voluntary work for a social purpose, for example for a sports club, music association or care home
  • You do not do any commercial volunteer work. This means that you are not working instead of a paid employee
  • You do not get paid for volunteering. A real expense allowance is allowed. This means that you have actually incurred the costs and that you have submitted a receipt for it, for example for travel costs

how much money do i get

  • The volunteer premium is €250 per calendar year
  • This amount is determined each year by the municipality

What do you have to do

  1. You fill it application form for volunteering premium (pdf, 216 kB) in. This also includes the Voluntary Work Declaration form
  2. The organization where you volunteer will complete this statement for you
    • If you do voluntary work for several organizations, all organizations must complete this statement for you
  3. You send all completed forms to the municipality. No stamp is required:

After your request

  • Once you have submitted the application form and the statement(s), the municipality will make a decision as soon as possible. This will take up to 8 weeks
  • You will receive a letter with the decision. When your application is approved, the money will be deposited into your bank account
  • If you do not agree with the decision, you can contact the person who assessed your application. You can also directly to object against the decision of the municipality
