Help with housing costs

Your income is suddenly much lower and you can no longer pay your rent or mortgage. For example, due to illness, divorce or unemployment. The housing allowance helps with this. You will then receive temporary money.

What do you need to know

  • Housing allowance is different from rent allowance
  • Rent allowance goes before housing allowance. This means that you can only receive housing allowance if you are not entitled to housing allowance. For example, if you have an owner-occupied home or if your rent is higher than the rent benefit limit
  • Housing allowance is a type of special assistance. You can also apply for this if you do not have social assistance benefits
  • How much money you get depends on your situation. That's different for everyone. The housing allowance is never higher than the maximum amount the tax authorities gives in rent allowance
  • You will receive the housing allowance for a maximum of 6 months. Sometimes this can be extended for another 6 months

Terms & conditions

  • You rent a house or you own a house in Hilversum. You live in this house yourself
  • You are 18 years or older
  • Your income has fallen unexpectedly and a lot
  • You do not have enough income and/or assets to pay the costs yourself. If your income is higher than 130% of the social assistance standard that applies to you, you may still be eligible for reimbursement of part of the costs. The income above 130% is used to reduce the special assistance by this amount, this is called capacity

  • It is not your fault that you can no longer pay your rent or mortgage
  • You can't live anywhere else

  • You can prove that you are actively looking for a cheaper home. This is not necessary if you live in an owner-occupied home with housing costs below the housing benefit limit
