“Registration can be quite a hurdle,” according to Killian. “So if you see that we are open and you think it would be fun for yourself or someone else, just come by. You can also bring someone with you.” People with a mild intellectual disability and people who receive psychological help come together at the Sherpa support points for a meal or a cup of coffee. Killian: “But we are also more accessible.”
Personal attention
“For many of our participants, just sitting at a table together and feeling like you have to talk is incredibly exciting. Eating or drinking coffee together is easier then,” says Killian. Games are also played and creative activities are undertaken such as drawing, painting, crafting and diamond painting. The group size varies from five to a maximum of twelve participants. There is always a supervisor present who can provide personal attention, which involves the participants. Killian: “We offer our participants a bit of proximity.”
Watching football together
“We have seen for a long time, also from our outpatient work, that there is a great sense of loneliness. Not only among the forty-five-plus but also among the thirty-plus. Especially in Hilversum Oost, a vulnerable neighborhood with many single-person households. We do see beautiful friendships and cozy groups developing here. Some participants had no network for years and now watch football together every week. Those kinds of experiences are the best,” Killian believes.
living room
In almost every neighbourhood in Hilversum there is a 'living room' where Hilversum residents who need some extra guidance can participate in activities under the supervision of a professional. Think of sports, making soup, eating together, making furniture or maintaining a vegetable garden. The activities give content to their day and can be a first step towards (volunteer) work. The living rooms support participants in making new social contacts and staying active. They are easily accessible and can be visited without an indication. Residents do not first have to apply to the municipality for an 'indication' but can register directly at the location.
