Lost, stolen or damaged ID

You do not have to report it to the police if your passport or identity card is lost or stolen. Report the missing person online with your DigiD. If you later find the missing document, it is no longer valid and you hand it in to the municipality.

What do you need to know

  • The municipality can only issue a statement of theft or loss for Dutch identity cards and passports
  • The municipality is investigating your report
  • A new passport can be refused. For example, if you apply for a new one too often, if you handle your passport carelessly or if there is fraud

Loss abroad

  • If your proof of identity is lost abroad, you must report it to the police station there
  • After returning home, make an appointment at the City Office for the missing your identity card or for missing your passport
  • You take the foreign proof of declaration with you

Damaged

ID found

  • You have notified the municipality that your proof of identity has been lost, but you will find it later. The ID is no longer valid. You must hand in the recovered proof of identity to the municipality. You make an appointment for the missing your identity card or for missing your passport
  • If you find another person's ID, you can hand it in to the municipality. Not with the police

Beware of Fraud

  • If you are a victim of identity theft, you can report to the National government
  • In that case, you do not have your proof of identity registered as missing or stolen. The municipality reports the fraud to the National Office for Identity Data. The municipality will ensure that your proof of identity is no longer valid. You request a new one

What does it cost

Reporting theft or loss is free.
