You can have a deceased person buried or cremated. You need permission from the municipality for this. This is called a permit for burial or cremation. You give this leave to the cemetery or crematorium where the funeral takes place.
What do you need to know
- There are 3 cemeteries in Hilversum: De Noorderbegraafplaats, Bosdrift and Zuiderhof
- Hilversum has its own crematorium. This is located on the Zuiderhof cemetery
- Hilversum Funeral Foundation manages the cemeteries and the crematorium
You like the deceased buried or cremated:
- Not earlier than 36 hours after death
- Not later than 6 working days after death: Weekends and public holidays are not working days. New Year's Day, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Monday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are public holidays
Buried or cremated sooner or later
Burial or cremation earlier or later is possible if you have a good reason and with permission:
- Earlier than 36 hours: You need permission from the public prosecutor and the mayor of the municipality where the person died
- Later than 6 working days: You need permission from the mayor of the municipality where the deceased is at that time
What do you have to do
- The funeral director usually arranges leave for (earlier or later) burial or cremation for you. You can also do this yourself
- For the application it is necessary that you know where and when the burial or cremation will be
- You apply for leave for (earlier or later) burial or cremation at the same time as the declaration of death
- You also do this as someone died abroad and is buried or cremated in the Netherlands
Needed for the application
The funeral director will need the following documents from you:
- Valid ID
- Death certificate
- Certificate of death, for example: a medical certificate from a doctor or coroner. Proof of natural death or a statement from the prosecutor
