Why repairing really makes a difference

May 27, 2026
Repairing may seem like a small thing, but it is one of the most effective ways to prevent waste. An appliance, jacket, or chair that is repaired instead of replaced saves raw materials, energy, transport, and ultimately CO₂ emissions. What seems broken often doesn't need to be thrown away at all. By having something repaired, it gets a second life.

Many people think of the trash can when it comes to waste. But waste is created earlier: the moment we decide to buy something new. That is exactly where repairing can make the difference. One small choice can have a big impact.

Hilversum Repareert shows that it can be done

With Hilversum Repareert, we make that choice easier in Hilversum. At repair points and Repair Cafés, volunteer repairers are ready to help residents fix their belongings. You can drop by with small electrical appliances, textiles, toys, or small pieces of furniture. Together, we will assess what is broken and whether repair is possible. Often, more is possible than you think. By making repairing commonplace again, we reduce the amount of waste together. Not later, but now.

This is a good time to start

Zero Waste Week (June 1–7) is a great time to try repairing. Perhaps you have something at home that has been waiting for attention for months, or something you think might be fixable. Take it to a repair point. If repair isn't possible, at least you tried. That, too, is a step towards less waste.
