“Children like to play on the lawn of the Busken Huetplein. It had to stay that way. However, the square lacked atmosphere and looked a bit boring. Several trees were dead, there was little biodiversity and it could have been more water-friendly. Because the square slopes, we thought it would be nice to use rainwater for planting on the field.
Contact with district director
The first conversations about 'a more beautiful square' started in the summer of 2020. And a first enthusiastic group of neighbors emerged who wanted to exchange ideas about this. We made a drawing and contacted the municipality. That's how we ended up with district director Trude van de Ven. Then it really started. Trude suggested involving all square residents so that it would become a joint plan. We did that.
Corona caused some delays, but we eventually met on the square for consultation. With Trude as moderator, we discussed all the pros and cons. A group of residents started sketching together to provide the municipal architect with input. Trees, flowers, bees, butterflies: we saw all our wishes reflected in his proposal. Our idea to use rainwater for the square has also been taken seriously.
Neighbors in group app
A three-person 'project group', consisting of local residents Bart Geerdink, Robbert Sunter and myself, remained closely involved in the plan and its implementation. We kept the neighborhood informed of the progress in a group app. We also shared the final plan, with trees, plants and a wadi (a green ditch that serves as rainwater storage, ed.) via this app. Fortunately, we received many positive reactions to this. Ultimately, our plan was submitted to the municipal council because of the costs, which approved it.
Grand opening
The festive opening of our renovated square took place two months ago. Complete with a poffertjes stall, cotton candy machine, DJ, two councilors and many neighbors. I like that we created 'our new square' together and that everyone could participate in the discussion. We wouldn't have made it without district director Trude. Her contribution is very positive. She is involved and sees the importance of tackling issues.
My tip for other Hilversum residents: get started with your idea and discuss it with your neighbors. Our idea has actually been realized. This certainly benefits our living enjoyment and contact with the neighborhood. We now live here even better!”
Do you also have a good idea?
The municipality would like to hear your ideas (neighborhood initiatives) to make your neighborhood more enjoyable and help you implement them. Every district has a district budget, from which you can often contribute to your idea. Please contact your district director for this. For more information, see My Neighborhood page.
