Child abuse or domestic violence

You want to report child abuse or domestic violence. This can happen if it happens to you, or if you think it is happening to someone else.

What do you need to know

Domestic violence is all violence that happens within the family, (former) relationships and the family, but also with friends who come to visit. This can be:

  • Physical violence (hitting, kicking, shoving)
  • Sexual assault (touching when you don't want to, forcing to have sex)
  • Mental violence (swearing, humiliating, threatening, bullying, stalking)
  • Being aggressive (breaking things)
  • Exploitation (stealing money or belongings)
  • Neglect (give children or the elderly too little food or attention)

What does the municipality do

If a council employee thinks there is domestic violence or child abuse somewhere, they must do something about it by law. They then have to follow the 5 steps of the Report code domestic violence and child abuse. These 5 steps are:

  1. Write down any suspicions
  2. Consult with a colleague and perhaps also with Safe at Home
  3. Talk to the people involved
  4. Assess how serious the child abuse or domestic violence is
  5. Deciding to offer help or to report to Safe at Home

What do you have to do

  • Call us 112 if there is an immediate danger of child abuse or domestic violence. With yourself or with someone else
  • If there is no immediate danger, call Safe Home, via 0800-2000. This is possible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can also chat, from Monday to Friday, from 9.00 a.m. to 17.00 p.m., via safehome.nl
    • You can get anonymous advice on what you can do to stop or escape domestic violence or child abuse
    • You can report it anonymously if you believe someone else is experiencing domestic violence or child abuse
