Did you know that approximately 1 in 3 Dutch people suffer from wood burning? This mainly concerns odor nuisance, irritation of eyes and feeling short of breath due to an asthmatic reaction of the airways and having to keep windows and ventilation grilles closed or even taped shut.
Limiting smoke nuisance
If you are going to use the fireplace in the near future, you can reduce the amount of harmful substances by the way you burn wood.
- Windless or foggy? Better not to stoke. The smoke will linger
- Only burn dry wood. Damp wood produces extra smoke and particulate matter
- Never burn painted or impregnated wood or panels, as these can release very harmful substances.
- Do not burn paper and cardboard, as this produces a lot of smoke
- Always keep the air supply valve open to ensure complete combustion of the wood
- Have the chimney swept properly at least once a year
Always check the Heating guide when you are going to stoke and never stoke during a stoking alert. Also ask around if anyone has been bothered by your wood smoke and start a conversation. If you experience nuisance yourself, I will talk to the stoker and try to find a solution together. You can find more information on the page wood burning.
