The Municipality of Hilversum is taking measures to reduce flooding. As a resident you can also help.
What do you need to know
In the Municipal Water Management Plan Hilversum 2021-2026 describes how the municipality of Hilversum wants to reduce problems with water. We are talking about 3 different types of water:
- Waste water/dirty water: The dirty water from homes and businesses, such as from washing machines, toilets and showers
- Rainwater/precipitation: The water that falls from the sky, such as rain, snow and hail
- Groundwater: The water that has sunk into the soil, such as rainwater in the garden
Measures against flooding
- Less pressure on sewer: Many large roofs in Hilversum-Oost are still connected to the sewer. These connections will be closed in the coming 10 years. The municipality will contact the owners of buildings with large roofs and pay the costs. Such as at community centre de Geus
- Temporary rainwater collection: To reduce water nuisance after heavy rain showers, the municipality is working on a water storage facility in the centre and Hilversum-Oost. Rainwater can be temporarily collected in a water storage facility
- Better separation and drainage of water: Rainwater from roofs of houses often ends up in the sewer with the waste water. When there are road or sewer works, the municipality immediately checks whether the water can be better separated and drained or stored. As in the Hyacintenlaan
- Provide rules for construction projects: It is mandatory for all new construction, extensions and renovations to store the first 60 mm of precipitation that falls on the roof and tiles in 1 hour or to allow it to sink into the soil on your own site. Also, at least 20 mm of precipitation that falls in 1 hour must always be retained around the building without causing damage
What can you do
You can use water sustainably in various ways:
- Collect rainwater in a rain barrel
- Fewer tiles and more green in your garden, so that rain can sink into the ground better
- Create a facade garden
- Install a green roof
- Lowering water into the soil with an infiltration crate. Such a plastic crate ensures that rainwater enters the ground from the downspout instead of into the sewer. You can one order infiltration crate for free

Rainwater harvesting subsidy
De regulation Give space to greenery and water from the Amstel, Gooi en Vecht water board is a subsidy for measures that help you to collect water. Such as for a rain barrel, a facade garden, a green roof and more.
