In Hilversum, grass fields and roadsides are mowed, among other things. The municipality mows less in some places. For example, the municipality wants to grow more herbs and flowers. This provides a better place and more food for insects, such as the wild bee.

What do you need to know

  • In a number of places, lawns and roadsides are mowed only twice a year. Instead of 2 to 6 times a year
  • We do this to make a good habitat for insects, such as the wild bee
  • Other areas are still mowed regularly so that you can continue to relax, play or walk the dog
  • The mowed grass remains for 5 days. This way insects can crawl out of the mowed grass and find a safe place. Seeds can also fall from the plants and remain in the soil
  • At first, rough and tall grass grows back after mowing, but more herbs grow after 3 to 5 years. These herbs provide food for bees and other insects
  • A small portion of the lawns are not mowed at all to provide hiding places for bees and other animals
  • You are not allowed to mow the grass yourself. If you think that there is an unsafe situation due to, for example, overhanging grass on a walking or cycling path, you can make a report
