Daan's father-in-law, gardener Leo Kostelijk, started the ornamental plant nursery 45 years ago. Kostelijk decided to stop at the age of seventy and one day, six years ago, called his children together. Daan: "My wife and I both come from healthcare, where we worked as a supervisor for people with non-congenital brain damage. When we drove to Nederhorst den Berg for the interview, we were already fantasizing about what it would be like to be able to do our work in such a beautiful place." They moved to the site and started the day care. "We are now open four days a week and it is going really well," says Daan proudly.
Even with burnout
At Kwekerij Kostelijk, people with non-congenital brain damage can get to work, but also people with a distance to the labor market in the broad sense, such as with burn-out. Daan: “Last week, 10.000 cuttings arrived, which have to be potted. We sell a lot of mixed hanging baskets with as many as five different types. The pots are given a grid for the water reservoir and a price sticker. Everyone helps with this under supervision, tailored to his or her needs and abilities. It is nice to be working in the greenhouse because it is a pleasant place, in the open air among the plants but out of the wind. Today it even reached 21 degrees here.”
Between 18 and 86 years old
There are a maximum of 16 participants per half day. The groups are varied, the ages are between 18 and 86 years. "People come here who really want to do something", says Daan. "There are actually only two criteria for participating in our day activities. We have to be able to leave you alone for ten minutes, for example if we have to help a customer, and you must not find it annoying to work with plants. That has happened before", says Daan laughing.
More information
In almost every neighbourhood in Hilversum there is a 'living room' where Hilversum residents who need some extra guidance can participate in activities under the supervision of a professional. Think of sports, making soup, eating together, making furniture or maintaining a vegetable garden. The activities give content to their day and can be a first step towards (volunteer) work. The living rooms support participants in making new social contacts and staying active. They are easily accessible and can be visited without an indication. Residents do not first have to apply to the municipality for 'an individual provision' but can register directly.
