Making monuments more sustainable

You want to make a national or municipal monument more sustainable. You do not need a permit for simple measures such as applying radiator foil. You must apply for a permit for technical or structural adjustments.

What do you need to know

  • With the Permit check quickly check whether you need to apply for a permit or report for your work
  • Monuments have a protected status. This applies to the inside and outside of the building
  • Rules apply to making a monument more sustainable so that it retains its monumental value. You can request the “Handbook on making monuments more sustainable” with information and policy rules via monuments@hilversum.nl or read on officialannouncements.nl
  • For technical or structural adjustments, we advise you to have a building physics investigation or a sustainability scan carried out. With a building physics investigation you can rule out whether damage will occur to the walls after insulation, for example due to moisture.
  • With the Hilversum Insulation Program (HIP) you can apply for a subsidy for insulating your home
  • With the Sustainable Living Loan it is possible to borrow money for making your home more sustainable at an affordable interest rate
  • You can the government subsidy (Investment subsidy for sustainable energy and energy saving for home owners) for insulation, a solar boiler, heat pump or electric cooking facility
  • Op Energy desk Municipality of Hilversum you will find a subsidy check and an overview of the current regulations
  • The National Restoration Fund has its own subsidy scheme for the costs of sustainability advice for municipal and national monuments

Sustainability without a permit

  • Simple measures such as radiator foil or sealing cracks
  • Replacing non-monumental double glazing with new double glazing if the glass thickness, glass type and method of attaching the glass do not change
  • Replacing existing, modern installations such as central heating boilers in the same location as existing and with the same penetrations
  • Soil insulation in the crawl space
  • Making extensions and outbuildings without monumental value on the inside more sustainable. Provided that the exterior appearance does not change. Consult our cultural heritage advisors first to determine whether the extension or outbuilding has monumental value

Permit sustainability

  • A permit is always required at monuments to install solar panels, solar collectors or solar boilers
  • Most technical or architectural measures on a monument are custom-made. You must apply for a permit for this. This applies to the inside and outside of your building
  • For other rules that require a permit, go to the page Renovate or modify a monument
