Sewage charges

If your home or business premises are connected to the municipal sewer system, you will pay a sewer tax. This tax covers the maintenance, drainage, and management of wastewater, rainwater, and groundwater.

The municipality uses the sewer tax revenue to keep the sewer system clean and safe, to repair broken pipes, and to install new sewers when necessary. The costs incurred for this may not exceed what is necessary. Therefore, the municipality may only charge the amount of sewer tax necessary to perform these tasks.

What do you need to know

  • On 1 January you are the owner of a house or building that is connected to the sewer. Your rainwater goes through a well to the sewer. You then pay sewerage charges
  • If you are the owner after 1 January, you will pay the sewage charge the following year. The buyer and the seller can make arrangements with the civil-law notary about the payment of the difference in the sewage charge
